Posted By Dot Tadman Hi People, Can I ask for your help once again please? It would seem that its just one of those weeks, months, years etc. On carrying out site survey we have come across asbestos. It is in the old 're-wireable fuse holders on a distribution board. The manufacturers have told us that the asbestos is 'of a white woven type'. As to conform with modern electrical legislation we initially were looking to retro fit new fuses to the board. But, with the asbestos in mind, how would be the best way of tackling this? Can we take out these old fuses without disturbing the asbestos? Thanks Dot

Posted By Peter J Harvey Really you would have to tell us some more about the condition of the asbestos. Assuming that it is in good condition and changing the fuses will not disturb, or it can be encapsulated, you should leave it well alone. I would assume the fuse box can be secured, clearly there will be issues about whether to label it or not. If you are going to have to disturb the asbestos and release fibres, I would suggest that you have a sample analysed, you will need this information for your asbestos register (CAWR). Once you have the sample information using the methodology in the CAWR you can take further action. Hope this helps.

Posted By Ian Wakeham Hi Dot, In solving your problem, have you asked an electrical contractor who is experienced with asbestos and can provide such things as method statements and risk assessments to undertake the work, or, providing the power can be fully isolated, use a licensed contractor to remove the asbestos. If you require any further help with this or any other asbestos related problem, do not hesitate to contact me direct. Regards Ian

Posted By Paul Cook It sounds as though your trying to retrofit cartridge (HRC) fuses into a distribution board that housed rewireable fuses. The two most common types of board in which this mod. is possible are Bill Fuseboards (old silver colour) and MEM fuseboards (Battleship Grey colour). The chrysotile strip in these boards was installed as a flashguard usually it can be removed by a liscensed contractor using an 'H' Type vacuum with minimum fuss. If all else fails the new fuseholders will still fit in with the asbestos in place just mark up the door and monitor it as frequently as your risk assessment indicates.
