Do all night workers require health surveillance, if so can it be completed in house by an occupational nurse or do doctors have to be involved - What would you expect to find in a health report on employees

Yes,
Under the Working Time Regs, all night workers are entitled to these and my understanding is that they can be done by suitably qualified in-house staff.

What if they are not offered and the employee is unaware that the facility is there, is the employer liable for not looking after the welfare of night workers

My understanding of health and safety law is that ignorance of the law is not an acceptable defence in court and an organisation could still find themselves in bother.

Do you know if the health surveillance can take the form of a questioneer or does it have to be a physical examination.

Employees in our company are assessed annualy and they have the following checks.

blood pressure

lung function test

eye tests

cholesterol check

hearing tests

vibration white finger assessment

these are conducted by a company occupational health nurse.

Anita,
My understanding is that the "Health Assessment" required for night workers (Not Health Surveillance) can be in the form of a questionnaire.
My problem, which so far, is an unresponded to thread on page 2, is that I do not know what I can or cannot ask on such a questionnaire baring in mind such nasties as, Data Protection and Human rights etc etc.

Our local NHS Primary care Occupational Health & Safety Service will supply a confidential assessment for any night worker. They analyse the response and follow it up with a medical if required - the employer does not see the completed form. Prices are quite reasonable. This approach assures an impartial and confidential assessment and complies with the WTD.
