Good afternoon
I wonder if anyone could possibly help me please.
I need some clarification on the requirements for testing emergency lighting.
I have been told it needs to be done 3 times a year for am hour, monthly etc....
Any advice will be gratefully received.

BS 5266 require Emergency lighting to be given.
Daily. An inspection should be made every day to ascertain that:
(a) any fault recorded in the log book has been given urgent attention and action recorded.
(b)every lamp in a maintained system is lit. i.e. final exits
(c)the main control or indicating panel of each central battery system or engine driven generator plant indicates normal operation.
(d) any fault found is recorded in the log book and the action taken noted.
Without going into detail
Monthly each self contained light should be energised from its battery by simulating power failure for period not exceeding one quarter of its capacity on a 3 hr light about 45min. max or enough time to ensure all lights are working.
Six monthly a 3hr light should be energised for a period of 1 hr.
Three yearly each light should be given a full capacity test of 3 hrs on a 3hr capacity light.
Subsiquently this would be done annually even if the rechargable batteries have been changed because of possible deteriation of the inverter and charging circuit.
normal life of these batteries being about 4/5 years
