Hi all, I have a question on the size of gangways between desks. I know - "So far as is reasonably practicable, every floor in a workplace and surface of every traffic route in a workplace shall be kept free from obstruction and from any article or substance which may cause a person to slip, trip or fall" - I also know (Or at least thought I knew) that gangways between desk should be minimum 1 meter. The problem I have is this: In one area of my building, there is a "sales team" who live in an open plan area, that have organised their desks in such a way as to maximise the space - not a bad thing - but, they have created a gangway on just 1.2 meters. This is the only gangway for about 35 people to use, and so I feel that this is too small. This came to light, because a manager complained to me that every time she walked past the CO2 extinguisher on the column, it bruised her - and was it "absolutely necessary for it to stick out" - On investigation I noticed a hole in the wall where the bracket for my Water extinguisher had been pulled off… Suffice to say, I believe that these extinguishers are not necessary, because there is amply coverage - but this is a symptom of the space restriction. I can see there point of view, but is 1.2 meter gangway enough for 30+ people?

I personally don't think so…….

Thanks in advance.

In the areas I advise on we use 1.5 metres for gangways/walkways. In open plan areas where people organise their own desk layout to suit their teams, we insist on this 1.5m 'aisle'. Where the team is quite large we also advise two escape routes for those more than 2.5m from the main walkway or corridor. I hope this helps
