Posted By John Caboche Need some help formulating a policy for driving after night shifts now the rail industry comes under the Working Time Regulations. Does anybody have any idea what the guidance for driving, after a shift away from home, is with regard to this and how it interfaces with the Railway Safety Critical Work regulations? At the moment we are saying that anything more than 1 hours drive at the end of shift and the person must get into local accomodation and rest for 8 hours before returning home.

Posted By Kieran Duignan John Faced with an apparent lack of guidance about a safety matter, I find it useful to go through Approved Code of Practice for the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and see what ideas it might stimulate. In relation to night shift work, for example, you could draw on relevant research by Simon Folkyard about circadian rhythms to identify hazards and then work out relevant controls to manage the risks. It's also worth looking up relevant research on sleeping and eating patterns, the effects of their disturbance on health, and considering how the disturbance hazard might be controlled.
