Posted By catherine JMaher we currently rent a truck and need to provide the driver with the option to use the phone - can any hands free kit be used (eg earpiece) or does a cradle need to be provided - we dont own the van and therefore fitting a cradle is not really an option?

Posted By John Webster He may need to use the phone, but is there really no alternative to him using the phone whilst actually driving the van?

Posted By John Murgatroyd He cannot use it if the vans motor is running anyway. And given that many van drivers are have their hands full eating sandwiches, drinking cans of cola and reading road maps, you have to wonder if he has the time to phone as well.

Posted By Richard Mathews The driver is already provided with the option to use the phone, i.e. pull over in a safe spot, put on the hand-brake, switch off the engine, use the phone, resume journey when finished. There is no other safe way.

Posted By Chris Abbott Except that the number of people "pulling off the road" to answer phones, is causing the Kent Police a bit of a headache... especially on the M20 (When a driver rushed onto the hard shoulder to answer his phone and hit a car, obscured by a lorry driver, who was pulling over to the hard shoulder to answer his phone….)
LEAVE THE PHONE AT HOME!
:)
Just my opinion...

Posted By John Murgatroyd What part of: "Motorway hard shoulders are for emergency use only and you should only stop there if it is a real emergency and you have no other choice" do they not understand and:
"You should be properly prepared for your journey and you must not stop on the hard shoulder to: Go to the toilet. Use a mobile telephone. Check a route or map. Do anything else that can wait until you are in a safe place"
In short, instead of a risk assessment for them and their actions, try an intelligence test first.
You DON'T press any mobile phone keys when driving because OPERATING the mobile phone when driving is an offence...TALKING isn't if you have a hands free kit...
AND if there IS an accident, the mobile phone and the mobile company will have recorded any phone activity.
If using the phone is found to be the cause of an accident, you'd better hope nobody is killed. Manslaughter would be the offence then.
