If anyone out there has got any information on risks associated with operating a refuse service, and safe systems of work, I would greatly appreciate your help.

Graham,

There is a Health and Safety Laboratory Report on "Manual handling in refuse collection" HSL/2002/21 published in 2002. If I can find a copy of it I shall email it to the address supplied.

Hope this helps,

Off the top of my head:

Biological and chemical hazards
Sharps including needles & glass
Weather extremes
Manual Handling
Vehicle hazards from own and other road users
Verbal & Physical abuse
Slips, trips & falls
Animals eg dogs

You could of course talk to people like Onyx who have an excellent H&S system in place and with very impressive documentation.

I usually find if you approach a company's H&S Advisor they are happy to share their work.
