Posted By Ang. I was recently informed of the new training skills update course for Company First Aid personnel. I am a bit confused though and wondered if any of you can help? I am not clear if the course is just best practice. The training sessions are between a full and half day and are conducted on an annual basis (nothing to do with 4 day cert course, or 2 day refresher). I am doing the coaching bit to senior members of staff at work, however at the present time they are reluctant to authorise the skills training day (Even though a risk assessment has shown it's a positive thing to do). Have any of you taken this on board as part of your first aid policy?

Posted By Bill Elliott Yes - this is now included as part of our policy. It is all to do with "competence". When you have completed your 4 day training you need to use your skills to maintain competence. If you don't use the skills at all until it is time to do your update, nearly three years - are you really competent for the interim period between training? There may be an argument that if the skills are not used in this time frame, then a First aider is an overprovision when perhaps a appointed person would do?

Posted By Ken Taylor For our people, I do an Essentials of First-Aid session for those for whom a knowledge of first-aid would be of value in their work but are not required to be first-aiders. These can range from appointed persons to home visitors and care staff. The course is based upon the published HSE guidance supported by appropriate videos - depending upon the employees involved.

Posted By Marie Dolman All our first aiders attend a refresher course (approx 1 day) half way through their 3 year certificate, as they don't normally have a great deal of practice during this time. To my knowledge, this isn't a legal requirement but is deemed good practice. Marie.
