Posted By Phil.D.Baptiste Public Galleries: It is becomming increasingly difficult to control the activities of working artists in a gallery setting. Whilst making all the right noises, as far as health, safety and security, are concerned...the moment the cat is away...the real problem stems from staff on the ground who attempt to police the activities of artists. The artist will then complain to senior art staff...or threaten to pull out...resulting in a lack of support and eventual breakdown of roles and responsibilities. Although diplomacy, carrot, and banana republic, stick, policing have short term positive results, with both the artists and senior staff, the end result is always the same...any ideas? As an aside to this, the area Museums, Libraries and Archives Council is intending to form a network to share H&S best practice, if anybody's interested please contact my email or to gaeledwards@ymlac.org.uk

Posted By Ken Taylor It seems that you may need more cats and better-informed management. Presumably you report the various observed misdemeanours in writing? How about a written 'code of safe practice for persons working in our museums and galleries' document to be issued to all participants and used by the staff present in determining whether intervention is needed?

Posted By Chris Uren I am with Ken on this one. H&S is everybodies responsibility and the artists need the gallery and Visa versa. But above all whoever is there is the responsibility of the management. There is a slight difference for the visiting public, but the artists should be dealt with in the same way as staff A liitle bit of induction might be the gentle way to get the message across. Treat them like employees is the safe way.
