Posted By Darren J Green Been asked by a friend to do some risk assessments for an ATV 4x4 track, as Im used to factory environments does anyone have any experience in this respect. Ive walked the course, and pointed out any hazards, started to write the risk assessments/emergency response, H&S policy and training/coshh/maintenance procedures etc. Does anyone know of anything thats staring me in the face. Posted By Mike Miller This is a tough one bud. ATV's by their very nature will at some point cross through water. extraction of persons in an upside down half submerged vehicle can be a major hazard. Not so bad in my armed forces days as we had about 50+ guys, helicopters and loads of resources. Bit different in civvy street.
It might be an idea to contact your local TA centre as there is loads of good advice to be had there. Also there will be an advanced driving instructor at some point who for the price of a pint would share with you some valuable information.
At the very least he will give you some pointers to look out for.
Don't be put off because they are part timers, they train just as hard as the pofessionals these days.

Posted By Renny Thomson TechSP Have a look at http://www.borda.org.uk/you may find information there. They are well respected regarding training for operators of such facilities. You should also consider the content and structure of breifings to riders, supervision, PPE (including wet weather clothing, helmets etc), speed limits, maintainance and defect reporting. Bear in mind that ground conditions will vary (sometimes considerably) as the weather changes and errosion of the track occurs. The HSE has published advice sheets on the use of ATVs in the Agriculture sector that may be of use.
