Does anybody out there posess a procedure for evacuating a mother from a birthing pool during complications or emergencies. We are looking at using hoists etc but would be interested to know if anybody has any tried and tested methods.

Hoist sounds good to me. Releasing the water through a bloody great plug could work, but the mum/mum to be would be wet and difficult to lift etc....
I suppose you could have a birthing pool at height, with a ramp etc and suitable barriers for getting into it, that could be opened (like one of these OAP baths you see at trolley height and simply slid the person across onto the trolley....
Or perhaps do away with the method altogther and go back to basics!!

Try having a STANLEY KNIFE at hand.... A slight incision and....She'll be 'out' quicker than the baby!!

Posted By garry saunders You might want to try asking those who use them. I can think of the Association for the Improvement of Maternity Services (AIMS) and the Assciation of Radical Midwives (ARM). There is a midwifery e-group that you may be able to raise a question with. ukmidwifery@yahoogroups.comAs an aside is it more difficult to contemplate evacuation from a birthing pool than a patient in the middle of major transplant surgery?

This is Dependant on birthing pool type
Solid sided ie below floor level
at ground level
above ground level
Solid Plastic
or Aluminium framed with liners
as with any risk assessment and subsequent emergency procedures a comprehensive ammount of information is required
My ex partner hires out birthing tubs and the only previous requirement has been for the PAT
Generally speaking the novelty of the birth within a birthing tub has ensured more than one midwife is available in the home to ensure the mother and baby and safe and evacuation could be immediate with a aluminium framed tub by collapsing the sides
