Posted By Paul Leadbetter Is it ever acceptable to use plastic glazing in a fire door? A client has used perspex because they are a food producer and are wary of using glass in case glass fragments cause a contamination problem. I am having difficulty persuading them that their concerns are erroneous. Can plastic film be applied to contain any breakages without compromising the integrity of the glazing? Paul

Posted By jom Paul, Plastic film is used to contain broken plate glass. Modern glazing is often the type that shatters like windscreens. Have you ever heard of the phenomenon of "spontaneous shattering of plate glass"? It does happen that sheets of glass just decide to shatter. You will find more if you search on that, and some links to plastic film products. I had a whole list of links on the subject that I deleted two days ago. Cheers, J.

Posted By Dave Wilson Paul, Think the question should be not around the glass v Plastic issue but will the 'fire door' perform to the characteristics required ie 30 mins fire and smoke resistant if not then it cannot be a 'fire door'. You can use whatever materials you wish as long as the door performs! Does exactly what it says on the tin?
