Posted By christopher mudd Can anybody help. I need to erect a scaffold that has to reach 5.5 mtres high. It is roughly one metre square. There is no where to tie it to, there is no room to add outriggers, except on one side only. The scaffold is going to be erected inside a glass tower which is just over one metre square, hence the reason for not being able to tie it or being able to add outriggers. Specialist hydraulic scissor lifts have been tried but they could not access the building. Nor would they be allowed to cross a section of floor which was wooden. The tower itself is on a firm concrete base. Would it be acceptable to place weights (i.e. sandbags) to act as a counter balance and so stabilise the scaffold (just a thought, but I am getting desperate!)

Posted By Richard Webber Christopher, How about drilling into the concrete floor, installing ring ties, and tying the scaffold to them. Get an engineer to check the design, it shouldent be a problem because it is not very high! Richard

Posted By Martin Daly A Cara You can place weight at the bottom of the scaffold it is called Kentledge. This will reduce the centre of gravity to a safe point Please note someone needs to work out the amount of weight required and each weight needs to be weighed and marked. Also make sure you stagger the joints in the standards. This technique is rarely used in UK but very common in Europe. Yours Martin Daly

Posted By Martyn Hendrie The use of Sandbags (or similar loose material) as kentledge would not normally be accepted as the bags can leak, etc. It would normally be necessary to use solid objects as kentledge which would than be secured to the scaffold structure.
