I am the Health & Safety Officer for a Wood Recycling company.I have been in Health & Safety for one year and am still in the learning process.
We have labourers who work segregating the wood on site. As you can imagine the dust levels get quite high. To protect our employees they have to wear dust masks when levels are high (in dry atmospheres). We do have a dust extraction system on site and a 'mist air' system to keep the dust levels low. Even though we are taking steps to reduce the dust and protect our employees, sometimes the dust is still visable to the human eye in the atmosphere.
By law do you have to measure the dust levels?? Does this need to be documented? (Even if you have implemented control measures already to protect employees (dust masks etc, dust extraction).

Advise would be appreciated

Although a risk assessment has been done (in determining the need for PPE), how can you be sure that the PPE is offering enough protection if you do not know the dust levels in the workplace atmosphere? Since wood dust has an MEL, the duty is to keep exposures as far below the limit as reasonably practicable; are you sure that enough is being done to control exposures? You should only rely on PPE when other means of control do not keep exposures low enough.

The HSE website has so much info about wood dust and control measures that you will need a week to read it.
