Can anyone help with a few facts that might (through fear if needs be) encourage managers to buy in to health and safety e.g.

Health and safety failures currently cost Britain’s employers up to £6.5 billion every year. The average cost of an over three-day absence accident is £2234.
= good H&S can save you money.

Any examples would be appreciated.

Have you been on the HSE website and looked at the statistics available there ?

Also remind them they have a LEGAL obligation and if they choose to overlook H&S issues they leave themselves wide open to prosecution, fines, improvement/enforcement notices and even closure !

Whilst I sympathise with your problem the notion that good h&s practices actually save money in the long term is not accepted by all. Unfortunately there are some rational and irational arguments for and against. For example, the immediate benefits in terms of investment may be less palatible than the long term benefits. Whether you can persuade someone to 'invest' now for a later payback is problematical. Management are often looking for short term gains as well as long term.

Hope this makes sense.

Dear Robert

While people do repond to facts and statistics (and you can access them from sites quoted above and http://www.rospa.com/fac...fs/general_accidents.pdf) there are also emotional arguments.

How would you feel telling the relatives of a member of staff how sorry you were about the death of their partner/child/parent etc?

How would you feel explaining to a journalist what precautions you had taken?

or

How would you feel while being questioned in court about your actions or omissions?

Best regards

Peter

You need to get personal. As people are not interested about how much the country pays out [to distant] they are only intereseted in what effects them [proximity.

Start with cases such as OLL [Lyme Bay] and similar cases + personal fines etc towards directors & the like.

Push - that is the only way

Can I recommend HSC leaflet called "Reduce risks-cut costs" (INDG355) which includes an "incident cost calculator"? Also there are electronic accident and ill-health calculators on the HSE web site.
