Part M of the Building Regulations covers design of stairways.

Thanks to everyone for your comments.
The area in question is a landing area situated at the top of the stairs. There are handrails present but part of the landing area ( it is an "L" shape) covers the flight of stairs leading up to the top floor itself and there is nothing at the edge of the landing floor to prevent anything being accidently knocked over the edge and which could subsequently fall onto anybody using the flight below.
Hope that makes sense? I does to me but then again I can visualise the area.

Hi Louise,
There is no requirement for edge protection as you describe it, though it would be sensible to provide something if there is a danger of "things" falling (being kicked) off the landing.
We have many stairways similar to yours in accommodation blocks and teaching blocks with no such protection in place.
A solid balustrade would give the best protection if you think it's necessary.
