Posted By Phillipe Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) is deemed a health risk under COSHH regulations. Often as promotions in our stores, we give away balloons to our customers, as do many other retailers and businesses for that matter. I suppose the question I am asking is should I substitute all balloons to a latex free type. Bearing in mind the case of the nurse who claimed the damages recently, this is an area that I had not really given much thought to. Anyone want to discuss this ?

Posted By Kate Graham Balloons are much less likely to be a problem than surgical gloves - both because the contact is less intimate and frequent and because it's the powder in the gloves that tends to transmit the allergens and can cause respiratory as well as skin problems(where latex gloves are still used they are sometimes specified to be powder-free). The rate of allergy in the general population is very low (although it is high in health care workers who have had much more exposure over the years). There is an HSE leaflet "Latex and You" but it is directed at health care workers where the risks are much higher. You can always put a warning "Contains Latex".

Posted By Tim Phillipe You could start giving out large swathes of cotton wool instead. But then again maybe there is some obscure H&S reason why this might cause a problem ;-) Is this really how you want to be remembered? Tim
