Ladies & Gents,
I posted a thread a number of weeks ago asking for help in providing material for a near miss presentation I wanted to deliver at my company.
The response was excellent and thanks went out to those who offered support.
I now need to deliver a short manual handling presentation and wanted to know if there were any fellow members who would be able to help.
For those of you who may think I am an idle! I am not.
However, I am abroad working with people of Asian origin and finding it hard to get hold of any good training material out here.
If BA had not lost my entire luggage, I would not be in a position to ask.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Once again, many thanks in advance.
Hector.

You have a famous name sake, recalling the Iliad and the Trojan wars I suggest you emulate your namesake – ‘do your own fighting’.
Have you considered a risk assessment prior to embarking on an international venture? Have a plan such as option 1, 2, 3. Murphy’s Law always applies in these circumstances ‘what can go wrong, inevitably will go wrong’.
Baden Powell gave the scouts a motto “Be Prepared”. I have used this motto time and again and it has paid off. Having worked in Asia myself, I now commend this to you as it has been good advice.

Although it does not seem to be so in everyone's eyes, I always thought the purpose of these forums was to help each other out when we were in trouble.
All too often just recently, the purpose of these forums seem to have been to bicker and argue (not to mention shameless self-promotion or unhealthy defence of business interests).
I have a basic presentation you can have, I will send it to you via e-mail.
I have been using these forums since the day I started in health & safety, and practically every time I have needed help, some kind person has obliged. Long may it continue.
Kind regards
Nick

As this thread has touched on famous people from history and quotes from renowned cultural influences (although Lord knows how...) I thought I'd provide one from my own area of expertise:
"You can do it Otto, You can do it Otto, Help each other out, that'll be our motto" (Homer Simpson, 1997)

Sorry if I sounded uncharitable, to be caught out once is understandable; to be caught twice sounds a mite careless.
I support I come from the school of providing people with the ability to ‘fix it’ not necessary the finished product, although when this has been judged to be the only solution to the problem then I have given freely of my intellectual skills.
My view was not to act uncharitably but to advise on a more cautious approach to the activity.
In rely to my critics, I use the following quote:
‘I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it’. Voltaire (1694-1778)
May this ever be!
By the way I am family with the great works of the Bard ‘Homer Simpson’

Dear Hector
i have emailed you a couple of useful power point presentations on manual handling that i have used for my own clients
Hope you find them useful
I was not particularly impressed or surprised about the less than charitable responses from some of my fellow members.
(all men.....wonder why?)
we are here to support and assist each other.
Lets do that shall we boys?
By the way, modern airline restrictions on travel allowances dont allow us to carry very much, a 128MB jump drive is not much bigger than a packet of chewing gum....and much more useful.

Perhaps it is me just being thick (and it probably is...), but I am not seeing the relevance of many of your quotes?
It brings to mind another one:
"A fine quotation is a diamond on the finger of a man of wit, and a pebble in the hand of a fool." (Joseph Roux)

I do like your last entry. To the scorn of others I say:
I have gained this by philosophy: that I do without being commanded what others do only from fear of the law.
Aristotle, from Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers
What I really wonder about is why all the concern about the time I waste.
The time is 0045. Time is a man made concept and time wasting is mine to waste for I am my own ‘Boss’.
Therefore seek not to worry oneself about the time but remember Mr. Harrison, who provided the Navy with a clock that lost a tenth of a second a month and proved longitude and in whose honour the meridian is taken from Greenwich.
Mr. Harrison, an inspired and ‘Great Artisan’. Consumed by time.
We must use time as a tool, not as a crutch.
John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963)

I would just like to thank everyone who has POSITIVLEY CONTRIBUTED to my thread.
Whilst I am taking the time to write this, may I take this opportunity to express my opinion on one issue that I think is IMPORTANT.
This is an open forum granted, however, if particular members who have nothing positive to contribute, continually hijack it, it can only serve to dampen those people who will feel intimidated.
This is not speculation, it is fact and has been mentioned a number of times.
I asked for help on a presentation as I wanted to help a number of people who do not have the benefit of the education and awareness that we take for granted.
Many thanks to you all who contributed, once again the good people of this forum have come up trumps.
I would just like to part with a not so famous quote.
“Richard Spencer, you are the weakest link, goodbye’’ (HECTOR, 2004)

Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.

If I am the weakest link as you say then who has done the manual handling risk assessment to ensure the load may be safely lifted or lowered?

All right, Richard seems to be losing it with the quotations and obtuse points but I think there is a grain of truth in his original posting. Simply asking for copies of presentations and then talking to them does not bode well for the trainees. Putting together your own presentation is a valuable learning experience which should improve the presentation because it will be your words, your style but more importantly will provide you with a wider understanding of the subject enabling you to deal effectively with questions/discussion (not to mention the role it will play in your personal development – may even be worth some cpd points?)
Simone, interesting comment 'all men.....wonder why?'. At the time it was posted I think (life's too short to check) there was only one dissenting voice (although I guess this posting will confirm your point!); hardly a representative sample!

Richard,
Whilst I do not have the time or the desire to enter in a debate on your issue, may I point out one thing that may have escaped your mind?
I do believe that I asked for help on a manual handling presentation, I don’t believe that I asked specifically about lifting or lowering.
Manual handling is not just about lifting and lowering and if you need any clarification on this, then I suggest you look at the guidance for the definition.

‘Hallelujah’, at last a glimmer of light!
The nexus between the author and his quote was a subtle clue. Mmmm perceptive of you.
As I said, the importance of self, in designing and providing educational material is ownership of that material one provides. Having now delivered many training courses, it is the ones I have developed or been involved in developing, that provide me with the greatest professional satisfaction. Knowing that I have imparted a degree of original thought is the reward of a teacher, and not merely acted as the conduit for someone else.
This then is my personal contribution to society. CPD encourages us to continue to learn, so that we as individual may continue to teach at the cutting edge, where I personally believed we should be.
I have noted the more prosaic comments and draw your attention to the following which is rather apt:
“Knowledge must be gained by ourselves. Mankind may supply us with the facts; but the results, even if they agree with previous ones, must be the work of our mind”.
Benjamin Disraeli (1804-81)
Now that was a little more interesting wasn’t it?

At last, a relevant quote! But all these quotes brings to mind the following:
"Some for renown, on scraps of learning dote,
And think they grow immortal as they quote." (Edward Young)

Nick
By the way, I am aware of the irony of using a quote to point out that you should not use too many quotes, so don't bother finding a quote to point it out.
