Posted By Mike Craven Have been asked to look at an immunisation programme (Tetanus, Hep B, etc) for refuse collectors, street sweepers, litter pickers, parks staff, building (housing) maintenance. Have looked at what the HSE has to say and have spoken to an Occupational Health nurse friend of mine. Am looking at risk assessment, but just wondered what other people (especially local gov't colleagues) do? Anyone want to tell me, please? Mike

Posted By Emma Forbes Hi Mike, Like yourself I work in LA in the same sort of sections - Parks, Cleansing etc. We offer immunisations against Tetanus and Hep B. It is purely voluntary and the benefits of immunisation are explained at the induction stage as are the health effects of contracting such ilnesses. It kind of works on scare tactics which I'm sure a lot of people won't agree with....! We were really lucky with Occupational Health as they keep all the records and check when boosters are needed, the admin of it is minimal. We keep a list of all the staff that have had their immunisations in their records. This is used as a control measure in our risk assessments against the biological hazards as 99% of the men have been immunised. The other 1%, we control by allocating tasks where the exposure to the risk is low.Hope it helps.... Emma.

Posted By Ken Taylor Generically assess for work groups; specifically assess for individuals where needed; and provide, advise, discount, etc as applicable - all with OH advice and employee consultation. [Non LA - but have been]
