Posted By John Young Has anybody ever had the need to provided employee training for explosives handling & storage?
As an aviation company, we only deal with small quantities of low risk substances but still need to satisfy our responsibilities. Work involves handling and storage of a small amount of detonators and flares etc. The company we have used in the past can no longer service our needs and I am seeking an alternative resource/provider.
I would appreciate hearing from anybody who could point me in the right direction .... theres an abundence of general H&S trainers out there but seemingly very few who are involved with explosives.

Posted By Laurie I haven't used them for a while, but at one time the MOD were frequently prepared to let civilian companies sit in on relevant courses on a commercial basis.
This would certainly be my first approach.

Posted By Rob Todd Hi,
I did my explosives training at the Royal Military College in Shrivenham (for special effects in the film and TV industry). It might be worth giving them a call to see if they still do commercial courses in the handling of explosives or allow commercial company's to train on their site.
Cheers
Rob

Posted By Mark Jarman John,
I am presuming that the materials you are handling are packed in accordance with IATA regualtions, and that you are not handling loose gunpowder etc.?
The Safety Regulation Group at the Civil Aviation Authority may be able to offer some advice. I don't have access to their number at the moment, but they are based at Gatwick Airport. I found them very approachable and supportive in my previous air-cargo role.

I recently had the same issue, working for a large UK airline, relating to pyrotechnics / squibs for extinguisher activation, etc. I attended the Royal Millitary College of Science at Shrivenham and completed an introduction to explosives and safety course - 5 days, not overly expensive.
Email me if you wish to know more.
