Does anyone know if there is a database (or similar) of companies in the UK that have adopted and are accredited to this standard. It would be good to have some names to put forward to the "Board" as part of a discusion paper.

Does anyone know if there is a "user" group that can be joined.

Any information appreciated

Hello Nigel,

From what I can see the take up of OHSAS 18001 has been patchy, I think because it is not yet a British or ISO standard.

In the oil industry many companies are moving towards it following on from ISO9000 and IOS14001 however this has been mainly customer driven as part of supply chain initiatives etc.

Most organisations described above model the set up of OHSAS 18001 to make future accreditation and/or Quality/Env system integration.

Hope this helps

It is worth looking at BS8800 which is an health and safety standard as opposed to 18001 which is more a quality system. Personally I still think HSG 65 is by far and large the best way forward as it allows for innovation without the interminable red tape and bureacracy. Remember also that the HSE haven't given any formal approval to 18001.

Cheers

Yes, thats a good point. HSG65 is the only management system in the world designed and advocated by a regulatory body.

Hi Nigel,

Samsung Corporation have made it company policy to acheive in all sites worldwide eventually, as have Hyundai. Samsung are beginning with their electronics divisions, Hyundai with their shipbuilding and heavy industries.

I know that one of our customers (Dell) demanded that all their suppliers acheive this standard. Take up of the standard is gaining momentum around the world.

Compliance at this stage with OHSAS18001 will mean that even if dealing with international customers, your safety management systems will be known to be at a certain standard. Also, when an ISO in this area does come out, complaince will be a relatively simple exercise.

I would suggest that whichever one of the standards you pick from those mentioned in previous postings, you will not be far from compliance with any of the others too!

BS 8800:2004-Guide to Occupational Health & Safety Systems is a British Standard compatible with HS(G)65, ILO Guidelines and OHSAS 18001.

The difference is that:-

It is not a simple task to use HSG65 to practically implement an OHSMS, wheras BS 8800 has a more systematic approach. In fact there is a good practical guide from BSI, "Managing Safety-the systems way"

However, neither HSG65, BS 8800 nor the ILO guidelines lend themselves to independent third party certification. So, if you require independent 3rd part certification of your OHSMS, OHSAS 18001 appears to be the best bet.

OHSAS 18001 is not a British or an international standard. It is a "specification" published by BSI with the collabration of certification bodies.

Until now, OHSAS 18001 is not accredited for certification by UKAS. This is because UKAS's accreditation remit is covered by an MOU with DTI. The MOU does not include OHSAS 18001. It is likely that the Dutch accreditation body, RvA is in the process of accrediting certification bodies for OHSAS 18001.

This is the anamoly--that for all practical purposes, OHSAS 18001 appears to be serving the purpose of a certification standard to the certification bodies worldwide, but technically, it is a specification, and not a British Standard.

Our organisation is on the brink of being registered to OHSAS 18001. BSI have been doing our audits and I would highly recommend it.

Last year, when I was gathering information to persuade our board of directors to back OHSAS 18001 registration,I rang BSI to see if similar organisations to ours had the registration. BSI looked into it and said that there were none. So, I presume they have a list of organisations who are registered. I suggest you give BSI call on 020 8996 7699

I would strongly recommend registration. It has been very powerful. I have found that individual managers and directors do not want the embarrasment of being the one who cocked-up the accreditation process! - so it gets them to take H&S very seriously!! Whereas if you follow HSG65 or BS8800 which are not subject to external audit, they rely too much on good will.

The Independent Safety Consultants Association are keen advocates of this system and have a database of national members. This Association offer 18001 Auditing as part of their service, address is www.isca.org.uk. Hope this helps.

Most of the auditors will have such lists, but these will only contain the names of those companies that they have audited and certificated themselves, not those done by other companies. So BSI's list will not have our name on it, because we were done by Lloyds Register.

Choose your auditor carefully - they can be a big help or no help at all for around the same money!

It is good to see 18001 receiving more attention in this country.
