Posted By Alec Wood Yes it is possible, but you may end up spending more of the working day resetting it than welding!
The surge inrush each time the unit is energised lead to a temporary imbalance in current flow which causes a false trip. Lots of large highly inductive loads have this problem, forklift truck chargers being a common one.

Posted By Calum R Cameron You are basically creating a dead short when you strike up the arc and therefore the RCD will trip. It would not be wise to use an RCD on welding equipment-waste of money. Look at other controls instead. Calum (ex electrician)

Posted By Ron Hunter It is possible to install an RCD (RCBO to be exact in IEE terms) with varying time delay action to take account of inrush or load currents - quite common in drive thru' car washes, other outside motorised equipment, etc. I've heard of delays up to 500ms within 'standard' RCBOs, don't know what electric welder would be though.
