Posted By Peter MacDonald Have any of you bright sparks out there got any good multi discipline topics I can use during Euro safety week. I'd like to get something 'different' to do but that can be delivered as a presentation.
Any ideas

Posted By Robert Paterson Hi Peter
You don't say what type of industry you are in. I suppose it maybe construction. If it is one idea that might help is to invovle your local school where you or one of your colleagues could give a talk at the school on safety within the construction industry especially where children are concerned.
Follow that up with conducted tours for the kids getting some feed back from them at a later stage. This can be used as evidence in your submission to HSE.Get local paper to cover your community invovlement.
Hows that , you may have already thought of that yourself.

Posted By Karen Todd How about getting a local tyre company to check all the cars in the car park for defective tyres? You could also persuade them to offer a discount for anyone who comes to them for new tyres as a result of the check.
Or how about staging a major accident scene in conjunction with St. John's ambulance or the like?
Get your PPE supplier to come in and do a presentation for all employees about eye protection or hearing protection.
Get a selection of safety videos and rig up a TV/video/projector in the canteen. This worked very well for me - at first I nipped down during the break times and started the videos playing, but some of the employees put them on for themselves to watch.
Have a "Tell us about things you think are unsafe" amnesty kind of thing. I got dozens of issues raised, some quite hair raising, that I would of had no idea were going on except for the high focus campaign. Then publish this on the noticeboard - what was reported and what has been done about it. This encourages people to report things, they see things being fixed / changes being made, and communication is improved.
I also had a "Talk to the Safety Officer" station - a table and 2 chairs in the middle of the floor where I sat for half an hour at a time a number of times during the week. When I first suggested this, a lot of the managers thought I was setting myself up for a hard time! I stuck a timetable to the desk so everyone could see when I would be there. I explained that they could come and raise any issues with me, or even just come to say hello (as I had only just started and didn't know very many by name). I also stressed that they could also come and see me at any other time. Again, this also worked very well. It was on a main thoroughfare, so a lot of people walking past decided they would use the opportunity to talk to me about things or get things off their chest. People even left notes on the table when I was not there asking me to go and see them about things!

Posted By Karen Todd Sorry Peter, I didn't read your posting properly.
If you want a presentation, how about something that although is work related relates to the home as well?
For example, I did some fire extinguisher training. There was a presentation and video backed up with practical training. This also made them think about fire safety in their own homes, so at the request of the employees I got the company doing the training (who also supply & service fire protection equipment) to bring in fire blankets and fire extinguishers that employees were able to purchase for use in their own homes / caravans / vehicles, etc.
Or how about slips, trips and falls? Get some statistics for STF at work, and also for STF at home. I remember hearing about a woman who died earlier in the year I believe when she slipped and fell onto a knife which was (upright) in the cutlery basket of the dishwasher.

Posted By Peter MacDonald Thanks Rob and Karen.
My industry is demolition and I'm part of a safety alliance on a major petro chemical site. The alliance is a made up of safety reps/managers from all the term contractors on the site. We meet once a week and go over site stats, new learning, current events and new innovations in safety. It's a really good forum but as it's on every week it's difficult to find new ways to stimulate people interest. Hence the request for ideas.
Thanks very much.
