Posted By Amanda Thorpe We are looking at getting a 'shunter'/yard truck for our warehouse facility to use to move trailers from one of our production facilities to another one just down the road; this would replace a conventional tractor unit and trailer. We've investigated the insurance/tax/training avenues and we understand the conventional lorry H&S implication in our yard and I've done a bit of research on these shunters but I feel we are a bit vague on the risks that these shunters have - over an above conventional traffic management. Anyone got a view on 'must haves' for these things which make life much easier from an operationa/health and safety view?

Posted By Alec Wood Some offer better all round visibility because of the lower cab, particularly of pedestrians and other stuff at ground level. Should be operated by a competent HGV driver though, someone used to handling long trailers safely. Overall though the case for using shunter units rather than the normal tractors is a financial, rather than a safety, one. Lots of places still use ordinary tractor units which have failed MOT for this task, not something I would recommend. Alec Wood Samsung Electronics

Posted By Ian Malugani Hi Could you possibly email any information about your shunter activities, we currently operate a shunt unit and are looking at what alternatives there are or improvements we could make. Many thanks Ian

Posted By D. Hilton Amanda, Dedicated shunter vehicles offer the advantage of greater visibility compared to conventional (road) tractor units but present additional hazard in terms of increased exposure to noise within the cab and dependent on design, the possibility of (accidental) fifth wheel (trailer) disconnect.
