I am trying to identify the sources of guidance for medicals for staff due to work activities, eg forklift drivers, crane operators, HGV drivers, etc. Any clues appreciated.

Thanks

Gavin

Best thing I can advise is to contact an occupational health service provider - they should be able to help, depending on what you need the information for.

You will need to contact an OH provider as whoever does the assessments for you will need to be competent to do so.
I have used various sources of OH advice and guidance in the past, I eventually employed a third party to provide on site services (including medicals for FLT drivers). If you're interested I can give you their contact details.

If you want to check the legal basis for your decision, consult 'Occupational Health Law', D M Kloss, Blackwell Science, 1998, 3rd edition

There is specific guideance for FLT drivers in either HSG 06 (I think) or L117 (thinking of top of my head and think this is probably the training doc)

For HGV drivers there is a medical standard that all GPs must authoirse the driver fit for - there is a standard form availabel at porst offices but can't remember the reference

As fro crane drivers I don't know of any specific restrictions

hope this helps

Gavin,

I have emailed you directly.

Our Occupational Health Division will be pleased to assist you.

We are able to carry out the occupational health assessments on your behalf in addition to carrying out the required medical assessments you require.

Feel free to contact me should you require further information.

Yours,

Gavin,

I work in the nuclear industry and have to have annual medicals to remain a classified radiation worker. We use "Health in Business"

Health in Business

Tel: 01925 846 333
Email: fellowsm@healthinbusiness.com

I know its based in Warrington and from your email, you are in London, but they may have a London office (just ask receptionist at end of phone) and should likely give you FREE advice as to the legal requirements for medicals etc.

Regards

James
