Posted By NAMIR I am currently involved in the decommisioning of food manufacturing plant and equipment from one site and transferring to another site in the UK. According to the DSEAR Regulations the new site has to be fully compliant and this is turning out to be a massive task and difficult to implement. For example we have to assess the potential risk from an explosion resulting from a gas main feeding a burner. If there is a gas leak from joints this has the potential to ignite. Hence the control measure would be to have welded jointes and the burner mechanism to be ATEX approved. However, what about maintenance of the gas line? Equally we had an incident of a gas leak when a FLT fractured a gas line and the fire alarm could not be activated in case it created a spark. The advise was to replace the fire sirens with ATEX approved type and the cost of this is herrondous. How far do we have to go in order to comply. What do other members think? NAMIR

Posted By fats van den raad I have followed the route of placing substantial barriers at all locations where there is a possibility of FLT's or other vehicles coming into contact with gas mains. This reduces the risk of this particular incident happening to a much lower level

Posted By Terry Smyth Namir Look at the historical nature of the risk and apply whatever control measures that are considerd to be reasonably practical Regards Terry
