Posted By Karen Todd Hello all,
I have a query about the use of different lanyards.
It is my understanding that if someone is at a lowish working height (say <5m) and if they fall using an energy absorbing lanyard (one of the concertina ones) then they will hit the ground a fair old whack, as this type of lanyard needs maybe 7m+ to work.
So, what might be more appropriate in these circumstances is, say, a fixed 2m lanyard (although they do still absorb some of the shock).
My question is - does anyone use both types of harnesses in different situations or have any rules of thumb, e.g. used fixed length non-concertina lanyard if working below 5m, use concertina type lanyard if working over 5m?
I have only ever seen people use the one type and stick to it, and to be honest I have seen people at a low working height using the concertina type and wondered if they realised their safety harness would be totally ineffective should they fall.
Regards,
Karen

I train my search officers to use both fall arrest devices and work position lanyards. There are many occassions when fall arrest is not appropriate and with the 3 different lengths of rope positioning lanyards they can only reach near to the edge but the length will not permit them to go any further.
The officers are not actually carrying out ony manual work but just need to look/inspect the area.
