Good morning all.

Regarding a new housing estate…

Are there any methods of measuring the health hazards relating to an Electricity Sub Station in relation to a domestic dwelling? (A power frequency meter springs to mind)

The station is located next to the property. I recall some years ago (Prior to becoming involved in H&S stories about Leukaemia – are these true?).

Who would carry out the testing and is there a charge? (So to speak)

What might the testing methods be?

Can the homeowner do anything else to protect themselves against the hazards? (Besides the obvious – moving house!)?

Lots of questions to take our minds off Dip results...

Thanks in advance!

I purchased a very good little book the other day entitled "Establishing a Dialogue on Risks from Electromagnetic Fields" published through TSO by the World Health Organisation.

There is a website you can have a look at with regard to these fields at

There is a statement on the NRPB website, with references to the research:

Stephen,
I have some personal experience of this. My property boundary is about 10 metres from a substation. After moving in I was concerned about noise rather than em radiation. I rang my power company(Yorkshire Electricity) who within 2-3 days ! sent a team of two with noise and radiation monitoring instruments. There was no charge for their services. Whether I struck lucky with some project they were running I don't know.

Beyond 2 metres from the substation itself the radiation is effectively zero, at least in my case. YE knew that already and the only purpose of coming was to demonstrate that exposure to em radiation in the house from wiring, digital displays etc outweighed any from the substation by hundreds of times. The noise problem was solved the next year when the substation was replaced with a completely silent version.

I have an open mind about the health effects of this radiation and I am not an expert in this area. All I can say is that in my case measurement did not show anything above background levels.

I had to look into this some years ago when someone decided to site our new nursery next to a sub-station.

With small children involved I had to be doubly certain there was absolutely no risk, and there wasn't.

Radiation decreases with distance on a logarithmic scale, and was already negligible at the sub-station boundary.

Have a look at the NRPB website anyway - you may find some info there
