Posted By David Brede I know it is a well worn whinge of safety folk but the current one being run by Danone to promote Actimel health food is getting to me.
In this a middle aged lady takes the product and starts to limbo under a construction site safety barrier made out of tape and then paddles through wet concrete!
I am sure that as we develop IOSH we could consider a sideline offering to review such ads and suggest alternative ways of depicting the benefits of such products.
In the meantime contact OFCOM to register your thoughts on this.

Personally I have done some silly things like the woman in the advert after drinking something... but the ABV was substantially higher than the actimel drink!
David, I'd hate to be sitting near you when you see the car advert where the window cleaner falls off his ladder and the woman rushes down stairs only to move her car and leave him dangling. I love it- classic!

Posted By Bill Bircham David - I couldn't agree more with your sentiments, it is adverts like these that really set back H&S in the UK, especially in the construction industry. The person responsible for H&S in that firm should be taken out and shot.
Lets look at the facts. Whoever heard of a tape SAFETY barrier? The woman concerned was clearly wearing inadequate footwear, was not in possession of any other PPE required (hard hat and Hi VI) and I seriously doubt she would have been given a site safety briefing by anyone.
All joking aside, I assume you were serious when you posted this item so . . I think that you do raise an interesting issue.
We can all easily spot the H&S risks apparent in many things we see on TV, but if we seriously lobbied against such items of amusement, which is what they are, and we were successful, try to imagine what TV would be like. Where would we stop?
Smile - be light-hearted, enjoy the gag!

I wonder if "Bacteria!", the anoraked geek in the other ad, will turn out to be a health and safety adviser?

Posted By Bill Bircham Hi All, especially Zoe!
More likely the Bactieria man is an occupational nurse!
Joking aside, lets not let this thread degenerate into a personal comments column eh? (Sorry Zoe, although I'm certain you didn't mean it, to me it felt that your comment was especially directed at David) Many may feel that David may have over-reacted to the TV Ad, but he has a right to his opinion and a right to have that respected.
Regards
Bill
PS - If it sounds like I'm being a bot defensive of David, true, he is a pal of mine I've known for a few years now.

Posted By Zoe Barnett Just for the record, my remark was intended as a humourous comment on the way H&S seems to be portrayed and not as a personal slight. Apologies for any inadvertent offence caused.

Posted By David Brede Thanks for your responses all.
Certainly I could think of a lot of gags that could be built around the limbo - ing theme.
I guess that there is a line between fun and a serious point and this one crossed it in my view.

Posted By Nigel Hammond Why not record the add and show it as a video clip on a health & safety course. Great for discussion.
