Posted By Chris Boocock I'm investigating the potential to subcontract the statutory inspections of our ladders, steps etc. Does any one have any experience or know of any companies that can do this work? Thanks - Chris

Posted By Jeff Manion Am not aware of any companies other than safety companies / services providers and / or individuals that do offer this service. We do this for clients as part of a fee, we also proceed this will training to the clients staff. JM

Posted By steve e ashton Chris... Just to be clear... I am fairly sure there is NO 'statutory' requirement for ladders to be inspected. An employer must provide and maintain equipment that is safe... and it is generally accepted that a routine inspection program is an essential part of an adequate maintenance regime. BUT this is not the same thing as saying there is a legal obligation to test or examine... As with portable electrical appliance testing, if you are willing to pay a lot of money, you will get someone to offer to do whatever you want them to. Whether that is money well spent, or whether you may be better advised instructing one of your internal competent and experienced tradespeople to do the work as part of his/her day job is a moot and often neglected question. I know the modern trend is to outsource everything, but sometimes, it is common sense, far cheaper and just as effective to retain jobs inhouse...

Posted By Chris Boocock Thanks for your help and replies. I understand that the inspections are not statutory, but one of our internal standards is to regularly inspect ladders so as to demonstrate compliance with PUWER. We do have some competent persons who have been trained to inspect ladders, but, like a lot of preventative maintenance, it's not as sexy as firefighting reactive maintenance - so inevitably it doesn't get done. We have tried using our own domestic contractors - but we had the same problem with them - hence I was seeking a company to bring on site to inspect ladders alone. We had exactly the same problem with P.A.T., which wasn't successfully done until we outsourced the work. Thanks again.
