Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can help?

I work in a company that specialises in the plasma cutting of stainless steel profiles. For those people who don't know what plasma cutting is i will explain.

Mechanised plasma cutting machines use a plasma torch to cut metal plate usually to profiles, i.e. shapes. the torch is mounted on a gantry and is moved in 2 horizontal axes over the steel plate which is supported on a grid or bed.

A plasma torch produces an arc which is struck initially as a pilot arc between a central electrode and the nozzle of the torch. Gas is then passed under pressure around the arc and passed through a restricted opening in the nozzle. this results in a high temperature ionised plasma stream. the arc is thus transferred from the nozzle and then passed between the electrode and the workpiece. the constriction of the arc melts a narrow region of metal which is then blown away by the force of the arc.

My problem is this. Because the plasma torch produces an arc similar to welding, eye protection is needed to protect the operator from the obvious. The process of plasma cutting is also very noisy (second action level)so hearing protection is also needed (both these items are supplied to operatives) but i am finding it very difficult to find a supplier that can supply both these items so they can be worn together comfortably and without reducing the effectiveness of the PPE.

Does anyone out there know of any reputable suppliers of PPE that could help us.

I thank any replies in advance.

Regards, Mick

Have you tried the obvious ones such as Arco, or Grennhams. they are in the book and are national companies.
