Posted By Joe Ridley Hi there, I hopr this makes sense! One of our centre managers has been advised to up grade his fire alarm system as it is out dated, he was also informed that as his current system is connected to the mains, it was illegal for this to be so. Is this the case? I have never heard of this and I do know there has been fire safety checks carried out by the fire service and they have not mentioned it. Can any one clarify this for me Cheers Joe

Posted By Ian Forster from the sounds of it you have an old 3 wire system, this was basically a switched live(230v) to mains bells, no monitoring of devices or cable. A new system would have to meet BS5839, depending on the environment visual as well as audible indication of a fire may be need, I guess DDA will have some bearing now. hope this helps Ian

Posted By Charles Robinson Tech SP All commercial fire alarms need to have a mains supply to charge the internal battery though from memory the requirments of BS 5839 are that it should have a dedicated switch from the mains marked fire alarm and be red to identify it also the supply cable from the switch to the fire panel should be in fire resistant cable
