Posted By Geoff S Bottomley I have a potential explosive atmosphere area in my factory (Dust). We have an occasional delivery of oil drums.
What is the best type FLT to use to reduce the risk of an ignition source.
And if a man holds a reach truck licence does he he require additional training/licencing to operate a VNA truck.

Posted By Paul Oliver Hi Geoff,
What control measures are currently in place to prevent the explosive atmosphere from occurring?
You can obtain/hire gas operated FLT's which emit no fume and are used within teh petro-chem industry. a national hire company like Hewden, A-Plant etc would be able to advise further on this as they are the experts.
As for the operation of reach trucks. I'm not to sure what a VNA truck is? if your operator holds a reach truck competence card, then that is the only category of flt he will be able to operate. you will aslo have to maintain training records for each differnet type of reach trucks that he/she is competent to operate.

Posted By Paul Birney Hi Geoff, My workplace also has hazards associated with potentially explosive atmosphere, this is due though to fumes from solvents not dust. The only fork lifts allowed in the DSEAR zones are fitted with Pyroban systems, these detect fumes and shut down the fork lift truck. Check out the web site I am sure they can do devices for dust hazards as well. http://www.pyroban.com/safehandling/index.htmRegards Paul
