Posted By Stevie Looking for some advice...does anyone know the minimum access 'gap' required (in the event of an emergency) behind a door in a single entry dwelling where a stairlift has been fitted. Have had conflicting advice (from 410 mm to 450 mm opening required) but would appreciate if this could be clarified along with source of guidance. Regards Stevie

Posted By Ken Chappell Stevie, You'll be able to get the answer from the European standard EN81-70 This European Standard EN81-70 covers the design of lifts in such a way that their features would not obstruct or impede access and use by disabled people. The standard defines the requirements for new lifts, but may be used as guidance for upgrading existing lifts. As a means to identify the deficiencies of an existing lift to access and use by the disabled an “access audit” should be carried out. Unfortunately I haven't got a copy of the standard to hand. You could try contacting Thyssenkrupp Accessibility who will be able to help. Hope this helps Regards, Ken Chappell
