Posted By s.micklewright Some guys in blue overalls with ladders and tools and stuff came to adjust some windows in our office yesterday. What regarding the health safety and welfare of our staff and the contractors should be done, is there a stadard procedural list of to-do's?

Posted By Peter MacDonald Depends.. In terms of good practice they should at least have a safe system of work or method statement based on a risk assessment of the scope of their undertaking (maintaining windows) and their work environment (live office. The size and duration of a project typically determines wether it comes under CDM so unless it's a huge office I doubt it's covered by CDM requirements.
I'm reading between the lines here but do I detect you were unhappy that the contractors turned up without your prior knowledge?

Posted By fats van den raad Is there a link between this question and your posting about dealing with intruders?
I would certainly be most annoyed if contractors just turn up without prior knowledge. As a matter of fact, I have been known to ask them to grace the premises with their absence untill such time as they make an appointment to carry out the work and furnish me with the relevant paperwork, i.e. method statement, competency and training records, safety policy, etc.

You may also want to consider A Permit to Work Scheme.
P.S did the alleged contractors have a hunting horn in their toolbox?
