One of our employees has told me that he has applied to the DWP (DHSS) for payments following an accident at work. He doesn't know the name of the payout but after friends of his got it he believes he is entitled to something like £30 a week for a period of time.
This is not compensation for loss of income (e.g. he has received sick pay whilst he has been off work).
I have told him I am sceptical that such a payout - simply because he has had an accident - exists but he is confident he will be paid.
Is anybody aware of such a payment - what it is and what it's basis is.
The way it has been described to me it would mean the government would be paying out billions if it was more widely known about.

Hi there,
the payment he is taking about is Industrial Injuries Benefit. You apply to the DWP who ask for details about the accident at work. You then have to attend a medical for an assessment on the level of disability you have received. The minimum disability is about 14%(I think) which gives you a payment of 20%. The compensation is set at a fixed amount for 20%, 30%, 40% etc up to 100%. The rates are available for the benefits agency. His payment of around £30 per week will either relate to 20% which is currently £24 per week or 30%. The payments can be stipulated to last for a certain amount of time, say 1 year when you can be re-assessed or you can be awarded the payment for life if the medical examiner believes that you have been disabled for life

thanks Jacq
In the case I am referring to the gent suffered a hernia - lost no time as a direct result and 7 weeks following hospitalisation for which he was payed by the companies sick pay scheme. He suffers no ongoing disability.
The allowance you describe wouldn't appear to fit this case - or would it?
thanks for your help

Hi there,
look at the government page www.jobcentreplus.co.uk for all the information on the subject. Remember there are two types accident/diseases. This would come under accidents but I am sceptical as no lasting disability has resulted.

the injured party has to be affected by the injury for a period of at least 3 months and for this iniial 3 month period he/she will recieve no industrial disabalement benefit. the benefit is only paid if the person is still affected by their injuries after this 3 month period.
the person will then have to attend regular medicals at the D.H.S.S. until it is decided that the injuries have improved, if this is the case you lose your benefit, or if the nature of the injuries is likely to affect you for the rest of your life you may well get the benefit indefinately.
