Posted By Tracey Kelly I'm studying Safety & Risk Management and am interested in Safety in Schools – in particular how teachers are trained in performing appropriate risk assessments, and what the children are taught about risks within particular subjects (e.g. science, VDU use).  Does anyone know of any reports or sources of information that would be helpful? I'm particularly interested in Irish schools, but info relating to British schools would also be appreciated. Thanks, Tracey

Posted By Kieran J Duignan Tracey There were reports on managing Safety and on managing Stress in schools in England and Wales published by the HSE in about 1996 and 1998. You should be able to find details at www.hse.gov.uk

Posted By Doreen Geoghegan Tracey - there are two reference books on Safety in Laboratories and Science for second level schools in Ireland. The local Education Centre to where you are will have copies available. There does not appear to be a structured risk assessment training integrated into the currirulum. Posted By Stephen The Local Education Authority have dediated H&S departments in the England & Wales. There may be similar in Ireland. The E & W ones have a wealth of information if Cheshire is anything to go by. You could always try them direct if you have not got the same in Ireland. Best Regards, Stephen

(downloadable from Technical Information pages) - I realise you are looking mostly for details of practical examples, rather than the mostly generic ideas presented in the guidance. However IOSH, and specifically the Education Specialist Group, would I'm sure be interested in your conclusions, and especially in tools which could be shared with other schools,as this guidance is presently being revised.
