Our mental health unit for adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 are planning field trips and are looking to strengthen the policies and gudance in arranging such trips.
They understand the need for risk assessments but are looking for guidance on ratios of staff to clients and any "best practice" examples from other sectors.
Are there any organisations out there, NHS,Social Services etc, who carry out this type of activity and can offer some advice?
Regards.

Mike, the "care" aspect of dealing with people with mental health problems is covered in clinical risk assessments in our organisation. These assessments deal very much with "risk taking" for example, when on "field" trips and will be very much linked to the individual, the diagnosis (or diagnoses), treatment regime, medication etc. This will determine the level of support needed, eg 1 to 1, 2 to 1 and so on. This risk taking exercise informs the health & safety risk assessment , so the two have to be married together and can not be looked at in isolation. One is determing the acceptabilty of risk to the "client", the other is dealing with the risk to the staff, general public etc.

It's not my area but I am sorry to see that you haven't had much response on this one.
Within the Education Sector, the DfES (tel: 0845 6022260)have published 'Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational Visits' together with 3 supplements and, if nothing better can be found, this document may be of some help to you.
The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (Tel: 01223 553416) also have a video 'Managing Fieldwork Safely' which, whilst aimed at shool teachers and older students, may also be of some assistance.
