Posted By Graham Fox. I know that this has probably been covered a 1000 times before, but what do the current Display Screen Regs say regarding if an employer has an obligation to pay for employees eye tests. I think there used to be a classification between a 'user' and an 'operator', does this still hold true or have the regs changed.

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Graham Employers are still obliged to pay for eye and eyesight tests for 'users' but the obligation does not extend to 'operators' as, by definition, they are not employees. Paul

Posted By David J Jones Graham, Under the current Regs (Health & Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regs 1992 as amended by the H & S (DSE) Regs 2002), regulation 1, (2) (d) - "user" means an employee who habitually uses display screen equipment as part of his normal work". HSE publication L26 goes on to say - "It will generally be appropriate to classify the person concerned as a user or operator if they: a) normally use DSE for continuous or near-continuous spells of an hour or more, b) use DSE in this way more or less daily, and, c) have to transfer information quickly to or from the DSE." The same publiction also gives some examples of those who are considered definite users, possible users and definitely not users. Regards David
