Posted By Len Eldridge We are a small engineering company with a mixture of manual lathes , milling and CNC machines. Three of the CNC are old (Slant Turns 20/35) and operators regularly defeat interlocks to 'set' the job. Job runs can be small, some 1 off. After discussion with the production manager, having pointed out the requirements of PUWER, he seized on a 'get out' in guidance indicating that for setting purposes it was permisible to run jobs incrementally with interlocks defeated and door open to assist visibility to ensure tool setup etc. Any thoughts as to whether this is acceptable, even with a safe system of work or PTW in place? Also, the practice of deburriing on CNC? Cheers.

Posted By Kevin Irwin Len, I had a similar situation with manual vertical borers. When we installed an totally enclosed guard we had a small interloked opening door for setting purposes. The door could only be opened with two key switches so that the operator had to make a deliberate act to use it. A fairly large red light was also activated when the door was open as areminder to the operator. This was backed up by a written instruction and specific training. The rationale for taking the actions we did was set out in the risk assessment.
