Morning all,
We have a crane that we want to modify by increasing its load bearing capacity therefore boom section design and manufacture, engine and all drives. We have a company who is only prepared to offer us a new crane because of what they see as CE marking requirements.
In addition they will design and manufacture the boom sectons but will not verify validity of their design. Thy say a new crane is the way to go.
My understanding is quite vague with the issue of modifications as opposed to new equipment. Are there any professionals out there who may offer an insight?

Lew,
your crane company has a sort of point. If you modify a design parameter significantly then effectively the unit becomes a new crane and will need to be CE marked in accordance with the Machinery Directive. This can be awkward but is not impossible. I used to deal with a guy at one of the Notified Bodies who dealt with this kind of modification on a regular basis I will mail more info seperately.
Regards
Peter.
