Colleagues,

I'm doing my CPC in road haulage at the minute (expanding my safety horizons) and have come across a statement that someone employed as a "driver's mate" must be aged over 18.

Does anyone know where this has come from, or can point me in the direction of the relevant legislation?

Thanks,
Karen

Not sure if this is the kind of answer you are looking for: But, any "drivers mate" under the age of 18 years would not be allowed on our site, or a number of other similar businesses I wouldn't imagine. Therefore, this "drivers mate" would not be of much use to the driver anyway should the purpose of he/she of been to assist with loading/unloading, etc.

Hi Karen,

just something else to be aware of (I'm sure you will have thought of this) is that anyone travelling as a drivers mate - when carrying dangerous goods - is subject to ADR Regs, and must have had ADR Awareness training.

Karen,

almost sure the working time directive would make this situation unworkable, without specific regulations.

regards,

Mark.
