Posted By Al Beevers My company safety rules state that all ladders and steps must be inspecteded monthly, in addition to the pre-use checks, and this is recorded on a ladder register. All ladders are Laddertagged, but I'm having real problems getting even a quarter of them inspected and recorded.
There are over 60 sets, and these are dispersed around a 30 acre site. The engineers who use them will open up the nearest cupboard, use those steps and put them back. I really need some ideas on how to get the engineers to write up the Laddertag, and enter it onto that month's register.
Issuing it as a job to one person per month has been tried, but as the ladders have no permanent storage place, it takes at least one full man day to do, and it is the least popular duty in the world.
Any bright ideas?

Posted By RP 1. Try and do the ladders quarterly instead. 2. Have users trained to inspect ladders and record their own findings to be sent to office monthly. 3. Have ladders brought in to central location for inspection. 4. Appoint persons responsible on each site location.
The inspection must be done by a competent person.

Posted By Ken Taylor Do they really need a recorded inspection every month? You could go with RP's suggestion for less frequent inspections by a competent person - supported by ladder training for all users incorporating an issued standard check-list and written instruction to check each ladder before each use.

Posted By Kevin Paul Clarke We have ladders issued to individual teams; they have been instructed on how to carry out initial inspections, this procedure is also included in their induction into the company. These individuals complete a weekly inspection report, which records serial numbers etc. This is being followed up by a 3 monthly-recorded inspection by a depot supervisor/manager. The latter I must admit is the hardest one to achieve.
