Ladies and Gents, I wonder if you can assist. I am currently working as an adviser for some major construction work. the question I have is that the Competent scaffold provider we are using want to introduce an electronic inspection and handover system because of the amount of scaffolds being errected and dismantled. This means that the inspections they carry out for the scaffolding they provide for us will be sent via email. which will also mean that the signatures will also be electronic.
Would this be acceptable if something went wrong? We do also audit their work and carry out our own inspections. Just cant seem to find anything in black and white.

As I understand it there is no longer a requirement for a signature on the inspection records. (simply a record of who carried out the inspection)
I also believe that it is acceptable to keep the records in electronic format provided they are kept in such away that they cannot be altered at a later date. I cannot remember the title of the regulations allowing this but it pre-dates the 1996 Construction (Health, safety & Welfare) Regulations.
Perhaps other colleagues can assist with further information.

The records for scaffolding inspections may be kept electronically but must be available for any audit or HSE requests. The handover certificate is not the inspection record and it is bad practice to have the scaffolding company inspect your scaffolding for you (will it pass?). You should have people within the client side to inspect the scaffolding prior to use, etc.

There is possible a requirement to provide a "as built" log book for the new / revised requirements would recommend you review the following:-
BS 5973:1981 Withdrawn, revised
Code of practice for access and working scaffolds and special scaffold structures in steel.
BS 5973:1990 Withdrawn, revised
Code of practice for access and working scaffolds and special scaffold structures in steel.
BS 5973:1993 Withdrawn, superseded
Code of practice for access and working scaffolds and special scaffold structures in steel.
BS EN 12810-1:2003
This refers to the year of issue 2003.
Facade scaffolds made of prefabricated components. Products specifications
The original BS 5973 appears to be withdrawn and revised and superseded by two standards. Should you require further information we would recommend the purchase of the revisions.

This refers to the year of issue 2003.

This refers to the year of issue 2003.
