Kate Adie's Autobiography?
Whats that all about then?
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
It does seem that Journalists are a completely different category of risk assessment all together.

Funny you should say that Ron. Until October this year when I changed jobs, I worked for BBC Technology and part of my job was to do the risk management for engineering and project management staff travelling to war zones and other like places where there are rebellions etc. In almost all cases I did the assessments from the ground and went in first including 3 times in Iraq in the last 12 months and 5 times in Afghanistan before, during and after the war. This was in most cases to ensure that we could broadcast back to the UK and beyond. So there are risk assessments done for all these areas.
If you have a look on the IOSH International Specialist Group section of this web site under the archive section in the news area - you will see an article by myself, entitled Health & Safety in Hostile Environments, which was printed in the Lancet Extreme Medicine journal (Vol 362 December 2003),which will give you just a few areas that are looked at.
I hope this helps.
Cheers
Rob
