Posted By Ciaran McAleenan Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit our best wishes from the City of Ashland Legal Department and its staff for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non- addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all... ...and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 1999, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great, (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only "AMERICA" in the western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform, or sexual preference of the wishee. (By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.) Source unknown Have fun.

Posted By Ron Hunter Sorry Ciaran - I think the winter solstice 'celebration' has origins with Druid fetivals, which may therefore exclude and discriminate against other religious groups!

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Lawyers huh, what would you do? Anyway, I beg to differ Ron, The winter solstice is a verifiable natural phenomenon, which occurs in the northern hemisphere on around the 21 December due to the angle of tilt of the Earth on its axis. Any associated religious celebration is a consequence of this event rather than a cause. Darn, I think I may have just caused offence to the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl by pointing that out. The only way to assuage the wrath to come is by sacrificing our enemies atop giant pyramids. ...Oh Jeremy, come over here a moment.

Posted By Ron Hunter Can't argue with that,Jonathan. Let's get all deep and philosophical then - are all Gods then just a consequence of natural events, or at least the inability of the people at the time to provide some other explanation?!!!!!!!!!

Posted By Gilly Margrave Obviously the only way to resolve this is to grant all celebrations (sacred and secular) as paid statutory holiday. That would of course include my birthday (next Wednesday); May Day; Your birthday (whenever that be)and all significant astronomical events (like the Sun coming up). By the way Jonathan when is the Feast Day of Quetzalcoatl? Gilly

Posted By Ken Taylor Thanks, Ciaran. I was able to crack the code - having worked in local government for some years in a previous life. It's been merry enough so far - but why am I reading this stuff on 25th December? With best wishes for the next 12 months.

Posted By Zoe Barnett Well said Gilly - yours is the day after mine so I definitely agree that they should both be bank holidays. However I would be grateful for any tips you may have on dealing with the stress of such a lousy birthday - years of people announcing they'd bought a "combined Christmas and birthday present" (yeah right, you cheapskate), birthday presents wrapped in Christmas paper, and people forgetting about it altogether in their alcoholic post-Yule haze... Happy birthday to anyone else who suffers in the same way!

Posted By Neil Pearson I'm recovering from my birthday, which was on New Year's Eve. I've often suffered from the "combined Xmas and birthday presents" syndrome. But on the other hand, my birthday is always party time, and I never have to work the next day. I like that, so I'm not copmplaining. The real problem is the ever-increasing number of birthdays I'm racking up...

Posted By Gilly Margrave Hi Yuletide Babies, My view is that if people forget to celebrate my birthday I don't get any older. Are six year olds allowed to be OSH proessionals or is there a danger we might throw the toys out of the pram? Gilly
