Posted By Geoff Dicker I work as a Local Govt H&S advisor and this year we have a temporary skating rink in the middle of our fair city. The event has been through our Events Safety Group and risk asessments and control measures are in place. In the two weeks in which the rink has been operating there have been a number of accidents - suspected fractures, and minor head injuries etc. When factored out to an accident rate the incidence is low, but to accept any level of injuries goes against the grain. I am asking, therefore, if any one else has any accident data that they would be willing to share with me privately or with the forum so that I can make a comparison to establish whether we are above or below the national average? A Happy New Year! Geoff Dicker

Posted By Ron Impey Hi Geoff, These are the stats for fractures treated at the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. http://emj.bmjjournals.c...content/full/18/3/167/T2 Nationally, the stats are quoted at: http://www.dti.gov.uk/ho...etynetwork/hass/1-27.pdf I used to be a first aider for St John Ambulance, and the duty at the local ice rink was where we treated more casualties than any other. Infact more than all the rest put together, including the local cycle racing circuit. I will e-mail you my guidance on visits to ice-skating rinks. Happy New Year! Ron
