Does anyone know if there are any particular requirements if a company wishes to drug test an employee who is under the age of 18? The company policy allows for random testing but is there a legal requirement to give any specific period of notice? What are the legal options, assuming a positive test?
Any help appreciated, thanks.

You could do worse than base your approach on the DfES guidance on drugs in schools, which is available at www.dfes.gov.uk/drugsguidance
The main things you will need to consider is what tests you will use (swabs? sniffer dogs?) and what you will do if someone tests positive.
It is important to remember that a positive result may not be due to substance misuse. I heard of a case recently in which a school student was identified by a sniffer dog as having used cannabis - it turned out that the child's terminally ill mother had been using it for pain relief. Needless to say this situation needed very sensitive handling. In my experience very few drugs tests turn up a result which indicates a real problem.
There may be all sorts of civil liberties issues to think about as well and you'll need to justify why you're testing for illegal drugs and not alcohol (which is likely to present the highest level of risk of any drug).
There should be a Drug Action Team in your area and they will probably be glad to help, or else you can go to www.frank.com for more details.
Do give me a call if you'd like to discuss further.

This is a full report on workplace drug testing.
It will answer all your questions, you may not like some of its conclusions however.
