Posted By Thomas Kennedy The HSE have set up a web page specifically covering the waste industry - it's got a shocking safety record. You can find it at - http://www.hse.gov.uk/waste/index.htm You could also try the websites of the relevant trade bodies - you can find a list of them at www.ciwm.co.uk You find safety's not discussed that much though - probably explains the poor record.

Posted By Merv Newman Mark, my experience of the waste recovery/recycling industry is that they have NO IDEA. They go for the absolute minimum investment needed to get the work. Their people are totally untrained and un protected. They do not know what is toxic, inflammable, reactive ... They will mix any material with anything else just to save space or to get rid of it. And they will not listen. Last year I was asked to give a safety presentation to an industry group (a number of different companies in the same business). They were particularly interested in Behavioural Based Safety. One of the participating companies was responsible for a deep mine disposal of INERT waste operation. Six weeks before the mine had caught fire and was still burning. INERT ? In my experience these people have no idea of chemistry, of biology or of physics. They are cowboys out for the money and exploiting poorly paid employees. Prove me wrong, someone.
