We are about to undertake assessments and training with regard to the driving standards of our staff.
This will encompass a range of vehicles from HGV's through to cars (and the staff that use them).
Can anybody who has been down this route already offer any advice on how to go about this?

I would become a member of the Fleet Transport Association (FTA) and use their guidance.

I would also speak to your insurance company they may be able to put you in touch with companies providing outside training, your local road transport department at the council may also help (they are always running schemes to improve road safety)

Hi David,
I work in a large organisation that recently decided to have a number of drivers assessed (for driving a specialised double decker bus, but no passengers) with a view to possible training: no additional driving licence required, but compliance with Provision and Use of Work Equipment.
A local large transport training organisation (accredited by various professional bodies)quoted driver training needs between 1-2 weeks per driver. We then sought additional assessments for the same drivers from another Nationally accredited training provider, who quoted us for both assessment and training costs.
ALL of the drivers were issued with Certificates of Competence by this provider and NO additional training required.
Worth getting various quotes!

You will have to be careful in your assessments of those who are just going to use normal cars. They have already been assessed as competent by the very fact that they have a driving licence. Who are any company to tell people that they aren't competent to drive when they have reached the required national standard.
Saying that though - I am sometimes amazed by some people who have alledgedly passed their test!!!!
Quoting the PUWER doesn't wash on standard cars as the individual has already been assessed as competent to use "machinery" of that class.
By all means increase the level of driving skills but I wouldn't advise you to say someone isn't competent.
This should equally apply to those who hold PSV and HGV licences but I do think you're right to assess vans etc.
Cheers
Rob
